The Cereal City Real Estate Connection: The Legacy Scholars Program in Battle Creek

The Legacy Scholars Program in Battle Creek

The Legacy Scholars program in Battle Creek was introduced in 2005 and made possible by a $4 Million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to provide a scholarship program for students in local high schools wanting to attend Kellogg Community College.

Kellogg Community CollegeThe program is available to students who attend Battle Creek Public Schools or the Lakeview School District from their sixth grade year through graduation.  Students who attend Pennfield, Harper Creek, or any other local private or charter schools are not eligible.

Approximately over 700 sixth graders are eligible for the Legacy Scholars program in Battle Creek every year.  Students are enrolled in the program as they enter 6th grade, and are nominated by caring adults in their lives, such as parents, guardians, teachers, coaches, pastors, mentors, etc. a the end of their 5th grade year.

Nomination forms are made available in English and in Spanish on multiple public locations in Battle Creek, and online.  From the nominated students, a selection committee reviews nominations and selects students.

If the student qualifies for the program, and upon graduation from the 8th grade decides to attend Kellogg Community College, he or she is able to obtain a 2 year scholarship or the equivalent of 62 credit hours which pays for tuition and books.  The Legacy Scholars program in Battle CreeLegacy Scholars Program in Battle Creekk effects real estate in one respect, a student must attend Battle Creek Public Schools or Lakeview Schools, and thus must live in one of those school districts to be able to attend as a student.

This program has become an added benefit for people in the home buying process, especially those with children approaching the 5th and 6th grade.  Students can also move between the two eligible school districts, as long as they remain in attendance from the 6th grade through graduation.

Another interesting thBattle Creek Real Estate & Battle Creek Homes for Saleing about the Legacy Scholars program in Battle Creek is that it is a ‘last dollar' program.  This means that if a student has another college scholarship, this one would be applied at the tail end of that program, allowing the student to maximize the benefits of both programs.

The Legacy Scholar program has a local website where more information can be obtained and covers all the frequently asked questions students and parents might have about the program.

As a local Realtor, I enjoy making new homeowners aware of this great community program.  It offers a local college education to students that do not quite have a major university worked out or decided upon, and helps them grow with the local community.

What a beautiful looking college and what a great program. Encourages me to keep eating my apple jacks and fruit loops. Is the peacock a resident at the college?
